Steps To Fix Invalid Operating System or Unsupported 16-bit application Error In McAfee

After you finally update your Windows operating system and install or use your McAfee Antivirus Security software, you might see one of the following errors as mentioned below:-

  1. Invalid Operating System error.
  2. The product is not compatible with the operating system that you are using.
  3. Unsupported 16-bit application error.
  4. The program or feature \??\C:\Users\Windows\regsvr32.exe cannot run or start due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of the Windows operating system. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows operating system compatible version is available or not.

Causes Of These Errors:-

There are two possible causes for all these errors are as follows:-

  1. There is another software program running in Compatibility Mode

The computer is running a software program in Compatibility Mode, which can interfere with the McAfee Antivirus software product that is installed. After you have upgraded your computer system to a newer operating system such as Windows 10 or 8, the compatibility settings might not be set correctly for some programs or files. These changes might have occurred either during the latest update or by user action. See all the Related Data or Information, below, to learn more about Compatibility Mode.

NOTE:- Applications of McAfee Antivirus security product work with the Windows operating system and supporting applications in the native mode of the Windows operating system, and not in Compatibility Mode. If compatibility settings are enabled on your system, they can interfere with the operation, installation, or both, of your McAfee Antivirus security software program. If you have applications that run in Compatibility Mode, perform the steps as given in Solution 1 in this solution guide.

  1. The operating system was upgraded without reinstalling the McAfee Antivirus software products

The version of the McAfee Antivirus Security Software products that are installed on your computer system was designed for a different operating system. If you have recently updated your computer system to a newer operating system, the process might not have validated the compatibility of all the software that is installed.

We recommend that you remove and reinstall your McAfee Antivirus security suite before you update to another windows operating system. After you update your windows operating system, you can reinstall the antivirus security applications from your online account. See Solution 2 for further details on instructions to remove and reinstall your McAfee Antivirus security software.

Solution 1

Reset Compatibility Mode settings for all current software programs.

IMPORTANT: The following steps include changes to the registry of the Windows which will affect the settings of Compatibility Mode of all programs on your computer system. Registry modifications could cause computer system failure if not done correctly, so only carry out these steps if you are familiar with modifying the windows registry and understand the process of restore. For more information about modifying the windows registry, you can visit the official website of Microsoft.

  1. Click the following link and save the file to your desktop screen:

  1. Now, double-click TS100483.bat.
  2. After that, Restart your computer system.

Your McAfee Antivirus security software program should now work correctly, and you should no longer see the messages of error as shown above.

NOTE: If your computer system starts behaving unexpectedly after making the changes above, use these steps to revert to your original settings of compatibility:

  1. Open the editor of the registry:

-Windows 7, 8, or 10:

a. Firstly, click on Start or the Windows Orb and type regedit into the box of search.

b. Then, Right-click on Regedit and select Run as Admin.

c. Click on Continue.

-Windows XP:

a. Firstly, click on Start and select Run.

b. Type Regedit and click on OK button.

  1. Navigate to the following mentioned key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers%Random Number%
(where %Random Number% is any number)

  1. Now, Right-click the key and select Rename.
  2. Rename the key to different Layers.
  3. Finally, close Regedit.

Use the McAfee Customer Product Removal tool to uninstall your McAfee Antivirus software products before you upgrade your windows operating system.
